Digital Library Solutions
Digitisation of information probably started leveling the playing field for all players across the globe in a knowledge economy. The role of Libraries as disseminators of knowledge can hardly be over emphasized. Libraries have had to evolve from being mere repositories for books and journals to playing a key role in making critical information available to users just in time to make key decisions.
Even before the advent of the Internet and the web, libraries sought to automate and network with each other so that their citizens could have easier and wider access to knowledge resources. The proliferation of resources such as other library catalogues, online databases, full text publications, electronic serials, learning resources, discussion forum postings, etc., on the web has posed a considerable challenge to librarians. How to cope with these new resources and newer forms of older resources is a question that requires to be addressed by all libraries and NewGenLib Digital Library system was created to meet this key requirement.
NewGenLib is probably the only library software that allows a library to manage its internal processes such as acquisitions, serials control, circulation, etc., but also to create and host an institutional open access repository. NewGenLib also allows libraries to serve both data provider and service provider functions. It is not necessary for libraries that use NewGenLib to learn to use two software programs, one for library management and another for the creation of digital open archives as with most other systems. These features, it is hoped, will improve the capacity of libraries to take a more proactive role in the emerging digital library scenario.
Key Features :NewGenLib supports the following international metadata standards that are important in today’s information environment.
Functional modules include Acquisitions, Technical Processing, Circulation, Serials Management, Reports, Utilities, and Administration.
